Fasting: One of the five pillars of Islam. During the Holy month of Ramadan fasting occurs from sunrise (dawn) to sunset along with refraining from sinful behavior. You will even find non-Muslims taking part in the traditional events, however, their reasons may be different and may be about a cleanse or challenge for their mind and body. Whether you decide to participate in Ramadan traditions or not, respect is certainly given to those who celebrate this month of sacrifice.

Ramadan is held for 29-30 days pending on the sightings of the moon’s phases; typically new moon to new moon. During these days many sacrifices are made but you should not sacrifice the health of your body and mind. Take this time to rejuvenate your body and transform it.

Here are three simple tips that anyone can manage to keep during Ramadan:

  1. Nutrition is the most important factor in transforming your body. Despite fasting, many people actually gain weight during Ramadan. Follow these few simple rules to help you stay on track:
    • Eliminate processed foods – specifically high salty fats
    • Eat your veggies – high fiber quantity
    • Add a high-quality lean protein source (e.g. lentils, beans, low-fat dairy, tofu)
    • Include good sources of fat (e.g. nuts/seeds, avocado, omega 3’s)
    • Drink water and drink extra when working out
  2. Fitness, a minimum of 20-30 minutes a day. Adding a variety of different styles of fitness will keep your body on it’s “toes”:
    • Include high-intensity Interval Training – twice a week
    • Include cardio (i.e. Define’s rev class)
    • Total body strength training (i.e. Define’s barre class)
    • Low-Intensity (i.e. yoga, Define’s mind class)
  3. Sleep, it does a body good! Our bodies function best on a minimum of seven hours of sleep. Studies show that lack of sleep can cause an increase in your appetite hormone and a decrease in the hormone that helps you feel full and burn fat.

Your body will be jumping for joy and celebrating its new and healthier you by following these few simple rules for the next 30 days (and beyond). You may even surprise yourself with your new absolute best body!

Be Healthy, Be Happy, Be Fit and let all that love flow through your heart. Hallmark, reminds us to show love, be loved, and give love during the month of February and more specifically on the 14th. But what if we decided to love (our heart) more than just one day, more than just the second month of the year? What if we begin to love (our heart) all year round, what will we gain?

Our heart is the strongest working muscle in our body. It gets loved and it gets broken but somehow it always manages to keep going. The heart is a muscle that needs exercise just as much as, if not more than, any other muscle in the body. The more active you are in life, the stronger and healthier your heart becomes.

Movement, any movement, is good for your heart and body. But there are three types of movement in particular that will greatly benefit your heart’s health: aerobic, stretching and strength training. Incorporating these types of movements into your daily life will ensure a happier, healthier, and more vibrant life overall.

It’s not about the biggest and hardest workout it’s more about the correct workout for your body. Not every workout is the right workout for you. So try to find the one that is suitable for your body type, health limitations (if any), and relaxes your mind. Working out isn’t just physical it also benefits the mind. Many people feel less anxiety and stress after a good run, barre class, spin class, yoga, or even a brisk walk in the park. Movement fuels our body, it keeps us going and it rejuvenates our soul.

Let’s get back to those three movement methods: cardio, stretching, and strength training. DEFINE created four methods that combine all three movements in one class. Yes, it’s true! You can accomplish a complete heart-healthy workout in as little as 45 minutes in our cycle class or in 60 minutes in our barre, yoga, and mind classes. DEFINE’s mission is to help you become your absolute best!

Aerobic (cardio) movement is fast enough to raise your heart rate to a safe level. Know your numbers; learn your resting heart rate, maximum heart rate, and your target heart rate. These three magic numbers will allow you to maximize your workouts and health safely. DEFINE’s cycle class is the perfect aerobic workout for your heart.

Stretching allows your muscles to become more flexible. The more flexibility in your muscles reduces the chances of injuries and strain on your body. Time, patience and practice help one’s body become more flexible. Everyone’s flexibility level is different because we all have different body types. DEFINE’s mind & yoga classes provide you with the absolute best opportunities to develop flexibility in your body while creating mobility.

Strength training allows you to build strong muscles to support your body. DEFINE’s barre class is the complete low-impact workout combining techniques from pilates, yoga, core strengthening, and ballet movements in a balanced training on a mat.

DEFINE loves you! In each DEFINE class, you will find our teachers love your heart health so much that each class is unique in its methods to keep you strong and healthy.

Do I still have time to make a change in 2018, or should I wait till next year?

Why wait?! There’s still plenty of time to make a better you and we at DEFINE mind & body Dubai can help you achieve your absolute best!

Have you ever heard the saying “it only takes 21 days to make a new habit or change an old habit”? Can it be done in 21 days? Is it really possible to become a better version of yourself in a short period?

Short answer: It depends. (Truth)

Creating a new habit or changing a habit can be accomplished in a short period depending on several factors: How complex is the change, Mustering the courage to take that first step, How will you maintain the discipline, Are you willing to put in the hard work. It can be done, and YOU can do it.

Choosing a medium complexity habit such as drinking a glass of water, instead of coffee, first thing in the morning has a greater potential to be infused in your life after 21 days. A more complex habit, quitting smoking, may take longer than 21 days but still can be accomplished.

So where does one begin? Let’s start with a few simple tips:

  1. Keep it simple. DEFINE your goal. Be specific and make it attainable. e.g. Walking for 10 minutes every morning; eating a salad once a day; taking a morning fitness class every Monday and Wednesday of the week.
  2. No exceptions. Don’t change the rules to suit the needs of the day. If you have selected a specific day/time to complete your new habit don’t change it to another day.
  3. Talk. After you’ve determined the goal, tell friends and family (especially your friends at DEFINE mind & body Dubai). They are your support team who will help you stay on track, keep you motivated, and may even join you on this wonderful journey.
  4. Affirmation. Positive thinking, positive mental attitude, and self-empowerment will help you achieve your goal. i.e. Create and repeat a daily affirmation (“I am strong, I am brave, I am smart!”) to keep you motivated.
  5. Persist. Practice, repeat, practice, repeat. Difficult times will come but don’t let them stop or delay you from your goal. Persist through the mental and physical challenges. All great musicians, athletes, artists and teachers have succeeded because of their persistence.
  6. Reward yourself. Everyone loves a little reward. Rewards may help keep you motivated. e.g. Rewards can be as simple as upgrading a small cup of coffee to a large at the end of the week, getting a new workout top, or taking a bubble bath.

Change is difficult but it’s only as difficult as you make it. All good things come in time; you control that time. Start simple and see your world in a new light! DEFINE mind & body’s mission is to help people live their absolute best!

DEFINE’s DJ rev Ride launches November 30th

DEFINE Dubai is launching its monthly DJ rev Ride on Friday 30th November and we can’t
wait to tell you all the reasons why this is going to rock your spinning sessions. Music and
fitness go hand in hand – they’re inextricably linked, and you’ll know this if you’ve ever tried
to do an intense gym workout without any background beats. I mean, it’s totally possible,
but the environment is completely different and it’s definitely harder to keep that
motivation going without the music to drive you.

That’s why the fitness industry has a bit of a party vibe to it these days, with heavy beats
taking centre stage. So many of us are getting our party rush from our workouts; whether
it’s a burst of HIIT, a session at the gym, or an intense spinning class that gets our
endorphins pumping and our bodies moving, music is key.

But what is it about music that gets us so revved up? There’s definitely a science to it, and
music is known to alter our moods – to have both a physical and psychological effect on how
we react and behave. Studies have shown that music can actually elevate your mood and
has been known in some cases to alleviate the effects of depression. This is all linked to
stress-related hormones like cortisol, and to certain structures in the brain related to
emotion regulation, positive mood, attention span and even memory. So if you think of
these effects and add them to a gym workout, then it’s easy to see why you get those feel-
good party vibes from a burst of fitness. And these are just some of the simple things that
music can do:

It gets us moving. The beats are what keep us on track, and the energy we get from the
music can make all the difference to our overall workout performance. It gives us something
to focus on, channelling our energy into movement, and surrounding distractions no longer
affect us. Music helps to keep us in that zone.

It energises us. Music taps into the body’s natural rhythm, and whether we are looking to
calm the body or amp it up, music can help to create a particular atmosphere depending on
the beats, the volume and the lyrics.

It’s social. Music is a great tone-setter and creates the environment. Add in the workout,
bring your fitness buddies, go for coffee after, have a catch-up and you’re golden.
Fitness experts from the industry talk about the importance of music in their workouts, so
we see how universal this theory is, no matter where you’re from or what area of sport
you’re in. DEFINE instructor, Sophie Burgess talks about what music means to her and why
it’s so important for motivation and drive.

1. How does music influence your workouts?
Music directly influences the classes I teach as they are all rhythm based. I can spend a lot of
time working on a playlist for my rev (spinning) class as each song has to be a different BPM
(beat per minute) in order to match varying resistance levels and techniques in the class. I
need songs for sprints, jogs and climbs – finding the right ones can be challenging
sometimes. On top of that, I know the tracks I play are what helps to motivate clients so I
need songs to get everyone to give their all. body (barre) is a little easier music-wise, as
typically most sections of the class are the same tempo. However, in any case, any music
that we incorporate needs to energise our clients and inspire them to push themselves.

2. What style of music do you choose for your sessions?
I primarily use a lot of EDM and RnB for my classes because clients recognise them and
they have a distinct build up and then an awesome drop. This really gets people moving to
the beat!

3. Do you think working out is the new going out?
Definitely! Lots of the music we play in our classes is the same as if you were out at a bar or
club so I believe it’s the healthier, cheaper way of going out. If you’ve ever come to DEFINE
on a Friday morning there is such a fun, social vibe in the studio. Everyone is excited to be
there and kickstart their weekend with a good workout. Who needs brunch when you can
barre!

We all know that if you want to really dedicate yourself to your workouts then it’s very
difficult to be a party animal by night and a fitness fiend first thing in the morning. Of course
it’s about everything in moderation, but if you can get that all-important endorphin rush
from a lively gym workout, or spinning session and hang out with your friends in the process
then what’s not to love?

Join us for the launch of DEFINE’s DJ rev Ride on Friday, November 30th, with their very own
DEFINE rev instructor-come-DJ, Chaz. Sessions will be at 9am and 10.15am, and you can
book your session right here: https://clients.mindbodyonline.com/classic/ws?studioid=981116&stype=-8&sTG=29&sVT=69&sView=day&sLoc=0&date=11/30/18

We recently challenged one of our favourite Dubai fitness bloggers, Sarah Zakzouk, to take on our 30-day fitness challenge, #DEFINEtogether. Five classes a week, four weeks in a row. After the challenge, we caught up with Sarah on her DEFINE experience and learned more about how her sports and fitness blog, Sports and the City DXB, is looking to impact the Dubai community!

How did you hear about DEFINE body & mind?

My friend Amanda (The Bikini Society) introduced me to DEFINE body & mind last year, and I joined her for my very first spin class! I was actually very intimidated by spinning. It just looked a little too intense for me, and then I tried the DEFINE rev (indoor cycling) class and absolutely loved it! It’s an awesome cardio workout, so the endorphins were seriously pumping, and that always feels good. Not going to lie, it took me by surprise, but that’s why you’ve got to get out of that comfort zone and try new things.

What inspired you to take our 30-day fitness challenge (20 classes in 30 days)?

The DEFINE team inspired me! I wasn’t sure I’d be able to fit it into my schedule. To be honest – you’ve got to really plan your time when working out 5 days a week and having a busy work schedule. I made it work because I had committed to it and was determined to see the challenge through to the end.

What was the toughest part of the 30-day fitness challenge?

The toughest part was probably fitting everything into my schedule; well, either that or doing a 6.30am DEFINE rev (indoor cycling) class with Haley after a 6.30pm DEFINE body class with Ivy the night before. The burn is real.

What was the easiest part of the 30-day fitness challenge?

The easiest part was actually doing the challenge – the instructors are incredibly good at what they do; they motivate you to work hard and they encourage you to come back and do it all again the next day. Being held accountable for my workouts actually helps me because I have no excuses. Once I had signed on the dotted line, I was in for the month, and I loved it.

What surprised you about the 30-day fitness challenge?

I was surprised at how quickly my body adapted to the workouts, and how strong I became after each week. The DEFINE body (barre) class was something I hadn’t enjoyed before the challenge because I wasn’t very good at it. Once I got a feel for it, I really got into it and enjoyed it a lot more. I have always loved the DEFINE rev (indoor cycling) class, and even more so during the challenge, because my fitness improved in a big way – so I certainly saw some great changes.

How do you stay on top of your workouts while being employed full time? And running your own blog on top that that!?

Very good question! It’s hard work, to be honest, and I’m sure a lot of people in this city face the same challenge. There just aren’t enough hours in the day! My fitness strategy is to be selective and to choose two or three studios that I love going to, buy a package from each (5-10 classes) and stick to them each week. Some days I will be at work later than others. I mix it up between morning and evening classes.

Where did the inspiration come from to create Sports And The City DXB?

Well, I have been a city girl for quite some time now. Two things that have always stuck with me are sports and writing. I wanted to start a blog that combined these passions, giving me the freedom to talk about sport and fitness in the concrete jungle, as well as the stories that occur quite naturally when living in a city like Dubai – from careers, to travel and all the random stuff in between. Inspired by a particular HBO series, and looking for something fun to call the blog, I decided on ‘Sports And The City’ as the name, and voila!

How would you like to see SATC grow?

SATC started as a passion project and a platform for me to delve into a range of interesting topics and to feature some really great interviews with inspiring people in and around the region. I also ran SATC’s first event in collaboration with DEFINE: Dubai and Men’s Health magazine, in celebration of International Women’s Day – which was a great success and so much fun! Essentially I would like to see SATC grow into a community for the sporty urban dwellers of this city, as a platform to tell stories and to motivate others to join the community themselves, to meet like-minded people, and get involved in all the great things that this city has to offer!

Describe your approach to fitness blogging.

There are a lot of fitness bloggers out there, and everyone has their own style. For me, I like to be both informative and also quite lighthearted in my approach. I like to read a blog that has its own personality. I like to think outside the box a little with the features that I write; it’s always great to find something new to talk about and introduce your readers to – whether that’s a new fitness trend or an inspiring person who is doing cool things to watch out for. It’s definitely important to get the facts right if you’re giving advice on health and fitness. At the end of the day, people are taking that information from your blog. Always consult the experts and do your research.

Do you have a mantra that helps you get through tough moments in DEFINE classes?

All sorts of things go through my head when I reach those tough moments in DEFINE classes. I don’t have a mantra per se. Ivy said something in her DEFINE rev (indoor cycling) class the other day that stuck with me. “If it wasn’t challenging, then it wasn’t worth it.” Boom. Well said.

Any advice for people who are interested in taking the DEFINE 30-day fitness challenge?

My advice would be to give it a go! You’ll be surprised at how much energy and strength you gain from the challenge. Although it might look like a big commitment time-wise, it’s totally worth adjusting your schedule for. Nobody ever said, “I really regret that workout” did they?

Challenge yourself to 20 classes in 30 days with our Absolute Best Monthly Unlimited Membership!

Wheather you are new to motherhood or an experienced Dubai mom (aka mum), navigating postnatal fitness can be nerve-wracking. We teamed up with DEFINE instructor, Lianna (who gave birth to a healthy baby girl in July 2017), to shed some light on what returning to fitness classes after having a baby can feel like.

How long after giving birth did you wait before returning to working out?

I took four weeks off of exercise and then my doctor to gave me the OK to work out.

How did it feel to get back into it?

At first, it was scary because my body was different. I wasn’t able to do everything I was doing before, and it was frustrating. Returning to abdominals was very tough for me.

How many weeks did it take for you to feel stronger?

I started to feel stronger pretty quickly. I probably started to feel good in class after about four weeks of working out.

How long did it take for you to lose the baby weight?

I gained about thirty pounds toward the end of my pregnancy. My weight is completely back down six months later. After pregnancy, your body doesn’t let you lose weight quickly. You need to maintain it for your milk. I didn’t start losing weight for 6-8 weeks after I began working out. It takes time and you just have to be patient.

What advice do you have for mothers who are nervous to get started?

Just come back! Take your time. Go slow. Do what you can. Just get in the room. The first time back is the scariest. DEFINE classes can be tough but know that we are here to welcome you back. Tell us you are post-natal and we will help you get through it! We can also give you modifications to help you build up your strength! So get moving. It will feel good! It’s good for your hormones, good for your milk, good for everything.

There are four methods at DEFINE: What are good classes for postnatal fitness?

It depends on what you want. I am a real DEFINE body and rev girl. At first, when I needed to relieve stress it was either a manicure or a class. My big goal was weight loss. I just wanted my body back. That may not be everyone’s goal so DEFINE yoga or mind can be a more gentle introduction to exercise. Once my weight started to come off, I loved DEFINE mind class because of the peace of mind it brought me to have a relaxing hour with no baby and no stress.

What will surprise moms when they return to exercise?

How amazing your body is at recovering! Don’t rush it, your body will get there. Our bodies are so strong. When your body is ready to drop the baby weight, it will. Your muscles will come back, your legs will come back, your bum will come back. Just be patient and remember that what works for one mom may not work for you.

Do you have any advice on diet for postnatal fitness?

Eat what you want, it’s probably what you need. Unless it’s cake, don’t eat cake every day. A glass of wine helps me! New moms need to relax. All things in balance.

Science has proven that the best way to form new habits (aka resolutions) is to start SMALL. The DEFINE: Dubai team wants to see you get the results you are looking for this year! Continue reading for three tips to burn more calories in 2018.

TIP #1: Connect a new habit to an old one.

A study published in the Medical Journal of Australia revealed that even 1,000 extra steps a day could decrease your chances of becoming sick. If you are looking to increase your step count in 2018, consider adding a walking (or jogging) loop around part of the Dubai Marina before or after your DEFINE session. You will increase the number of calories burned by adding as little as five minutes of extra work.

TIP #2: Scale a big goal back to a simple first step.

A significant source of empty calories in the UAE resident’s diet is take-away meals. Homemade meals are usually much healthier, but the convenience of delivery can make it difficult to cut back on this unhealthy habit. Before you tackle full meal-prep, start with snack prep! Something like carrot sticks with hummus or an apple with walnuts takes almost no time to prepare! Your snack can help curb your appetite after a workout so you are less likely to order your favourite Dubai pizza for dinner!

TIP #3: Make time to review your progress.

Set a timer on your phone to give yourself 5 minutes, once a week, to review the choices you have made. This short practice can help you evaluate how to move forward. If you had trouble achieving your goals that week, scale back to an even smaller target and start from there. Once your small steps feel become regular habits, scale up to a bigger goal!

Starting a workout routine can feel like a challenge. With so many options available, it seems crucial to research possibilities before investing time and money on your health. To help ease your mind before beginning your fitness journey with us, we have compiled these five frequently asked questions about starting workout routine at DEFINE body & mind:

Is it ok to take DEFINE classes as a beginner?

Our classes are open to all levels. If you are new to exercise, be sure to give your instructor a heads-up, and she will make sure to help you navigate your class with confidence.

How often should I workout?

As a beginner, aim to move your body 2-4 days each week. DEFINE classes are low impact, making them safe to attend multiple times a week. If you begin with two sessions, aim to increase to three by the 3rd week of training and four by the 4th. After eight weeks of training, your workouts should feel like a natural part of your weekly routine.

Do I need to include mind and yoga if weight loss is my goal?

A crucial part of a successful weight loss journey is consistency in training. DEFINE yoga and mind will help you develop balance in your body. The balance will prevent injuries and keep you healthy enough to attend all of your scheduled sessions. We strongly recommend incorporating 1 DEFINE yoga or mind class for every 2 DEFINE body or rev classes.

Should I workout when I am sore?

Because of the low impact nature of our classes, it is safe to attend class with soreness present. If the soreness is intense, consider taking one day off before returning to training. Try to train once every two days to help your muscles adjust to a more active lifestyle.

How long before I start to see changes in my body?

Rev (indoor cycling) and body (barre) are perfect to help you see changes in your body. If you are incorporating a combination of these classes at least four times a week, you will feel the changes after eight sessions. You will see them soon after! In a few weeks time, with guidance from the DEFINE team, you should be achieving visible results.
