We recently challenged one of our favourite Dubai fitness bloggers, Sarah Zakzouk, to take on our 30-day fitness challenge, #DEFINEtogether. Five classes a week, four weeks in a row. After the challenge, we caught up with Sarah on her DEFINE experience and learned more about how her sports and fitness blog, Sports and the City DXB, is looking to impact the Dubai community!

How did you hear about DEFINE body & mind?

My friend Amanda (The Bikini Society) introduced me to DEFINE body & mind last year, and I joined her for my very first spin class! I was actually very intimidated by spinning. It just looked a little too intense for me, and then I tried the DEFINE rev (indoor cycling) class and absolutely loved it! It’s an awesome cardio workout, so the endorphins were seriously pumping, and that always feels good. Not going to lie, it took me by surprise, but that’s why you’ve got to get out of that comfort zone and try new things.

What inspired you to take our 30-day fitness challenge (20 classes in 30 days)?

The DEFINE team inspired me! I wasn’t sure I’d be able to fit it into my schedule. To be honest – you’ve got to really plan your time when working out 5 days a week and having a busy work schedule. I made it work because I had committed to it and was determined to see the challenge through to the end.

What was the toughest part of the 30-day fitness challenge?

The toughest part was probably fitting everything into my schedule; well, either that or doing a 6.30am DEFINE rev (indoor cycling) class with Haley after a 6.30pm DEFINE body class with Ivy the night before. The burn is real.

What was the easiest part of the 30-day fitness challenge?

The easiest part was actually doing the challenge – the instructors are incredibly good at what they do; they motivate you to work hard and they encourage you to come back and do it all again the next day. Being held accountable for my workouts actually helps me because I have no excuses. Once I had signed on the dotted line, I was in for the month, and I loved it.

What surprised you about the 30-day fitness challenge?

I was surprised at how quickly my body adapted to the workouts, and how strong I became after each week. The DEFINE body (barre) class was something I hadn’t enjoyed before the challenge because I wasn’t very good at it. Once I got a feel for it, I really got into it and enjoyed it a lot more. I have always loved the DEFINE rev (indoor cycling) class, and even more so during the challenge, because my fitness improved in a big way – so I certainly saw some great changes.

How do you stay on top of your workouts while being employed full time? And running your own blog on top that that!?

Very good question! It’s hard work, to be honest, and I’m sure a lot of people in this city face the same challenge. There just aren’t enough hours in the day! My fitness strategy is to be selective and to choose two or three studios that I love going to, buy a package from each (5-10 classes) and stick to them each week. Some days I will be at work later than others. I mix it up between morning and evening classes.

Where did the inspiration come from to create Sports And The City DXB?

Well, I have been a city girl for quite some time now. Two things that have always stuck with me are sports and writing. I wanted to start a blog that combined these passions, giving me the freedom to talk about sport and fitness in the concrete jungle, as well as the stories that occur quite naturally when living in a city like Dubai – from careers, to travel and all the random stuff in between. Inspired by a particular HBO series, and looking for something fun to call the blog, I decided on ‘Sports And The City’ as the name, and voila!

How would you like to see SATC grow?

SATC started as a passion project and a platform for me to delve into a range of interesting topics and to feature some really great interviews with inspiring people in and around the region. I also ran SATC’s first event in collaboration with DEFINE: Dubai and Men’s Health magazine, in celebration of International Women’s Day – which was a great success and so much fun! Essentially I would like to see SATC grow into a community for the sporty urban dwellers of this city, as a platform to tell stories and to motivate others to join the community themselves, to meet like-minded people, and get involved in all the great things that this city has to offer!

Describe your approach to fitness blogging.

There are a lot of fitness bloggers out there, and everyone has their own style. For me, I like to be both informative and also quite lighthearted in my approach. I like to read a blog that has its own personality. I like to think outside the box a little with the features that I write; it’s always great to find something new to talk about and introduce your readers to – whether that’s a new fitness trend or an inspiring person who is doing cool things to watch out for. It’s definitely important to get the facts right if you’re giving advice on health and fitness. At the end of the day, people are taking that information from your blog. Always consult the experts and do your research.

Do you have a mantra that helps you get through tough moments in DEFINE classes?

All sorts of things go through my head when I reach those tough moments in DEFINE classes. I don’t have a mantra per se. Ivy said something in her DEFINE rev (indoor cycling) class the other day that stuck with me. “If it wasn’t challenging, then it wasn’t worth it.” Boom. Well said.

Any advice for people who are interested in taking the DEFINE 30-day fitness challenge?

My advice would be to give it a go! You’ll be surprised at how much energy and strength you gain from the challenge. Although it might look like a big commitment time-wise, it’s totally worth adjusting your schedule for. Nobody ever said, “I really regret that workout” did they?

Challenge yourself to 20 classes in 30 days with our Absolute Best Monthly Unlimited Membership!

Read Sarah’s own account of the challenge on her blog, Sports and the City DXB.

Wheather you are new to motherhood or an experienced Dubai mom (aka mum), navigating postnatal fitness can be nerve-wracking. We teamed up with DEFINE instructor, Lianna (who gave birth to a healthy baby girl in July 2017), to shed some light on what returning to fitness classes after having a baby can feel like.

How long after giving birth did you wait before returning to working out?

I took four weeks off of exercise and then my doctor to gave me the OK to work out.

How did it feel to get back into it?

At first, it was scary because my body was different. I wasn’t able to do everything I was doing before, and it was frustrating. Returning to abdominals was very tough for me.

How many weeks did it take for you to feel stronger?

I started to feel stronger pretty quickly. I probably started to feel good in class after about four weeks of working out.

How long did it take for you to lose the baby weight?

I gained about thirty pounds toward the end of my pregnancy. My weight is completely back down six months later. After pregnancy, your body doesn’t let you lose weight quickly. You need to maintain it for your milk. I didn’t start losing weight for 6-8 weeks after I began working out. It takes time and you just have to be patient.

What advice do you have for mothers who are nervous to get started?

Just come back! Take your time. Go slow. Do what you can. Just get in the room. The first time back is the scariest. DEFINE classes can be tough but know that we are here to welcome you back. Tell us you are post-natal and we will help you get through it! We can also give you modifications to help you build up your strength! So get moving. It will feel good! It’s good for your hormones, good for your milk, good for everything.

There are four methods at DEFINE: What are good classes for postnatal fitness?

It depends on what you want. I am a real DEFINE body and rev girl. At first, when I needed to relieve stress it was either a manicure or a class. My big goal was weight loss. I just wanted my body back. That may not be everyone’s goal so DEFINE yoga or mind can be a more gentle introduction to exercise. Once my weight started to come off, I loved DEFINE mind class because of the peace of mind it brought me to have a relaxing hour with no baby and no stress.

What will surprise moms when they return to exercise?

How amazing your body is at recovering! Don’t rush it, your body will get there. Our bodies are so strong. When your body is ready to drop the baby weight, it will. Your muscles will come back, your legs will come back, your bum will come back. Just be patient and remember that what works for one mom may not work for you.

Do you have any advice on diet for postnatal fitness?

Eat what you want, it’s probably what you need. Unless it’s cake, don’t eat cake every day. A glass of wine helps me! New moms need to relax. All things in balance.

Do you have a history of giving up on New Year’s resolutions? Chances are, your dreamy goals were just too BIG to manage. Science has proven that the best way to form new habits (aka resolutions) is to start SMALL. The DEFINE: Dubai team wants to see you get the results you are looking for this year! Continue reading for three tips to burn more calories in 2018.

TIP #1: Connect a new habit to an old one.

A study published in the Medical Journal of Australia revealed that even 1,000 extra steps a day could decrease your chances of becoming sick. If you are looking to increase your step count in 2018, consider adding a walking (or jogging) loop around part of the Dubai Marina before or after your DEFINE session. You will increase the number of calories burned by adding as little as five minutes of extra work.

TIP #2: Scale a big goal back to a simple first step.

A significant source of empty calories in the UAE resident’s diet is take-away meals. Homemade meals are usually much healthier, but the convenience of delivery can make it difficult to cut back on this unhealthy habit. Before you tackle full meal-prep, start with snack prep! Something like carrot sticks with hummus or an apple with walnuts takes almost no time to prepare! Your snack can help curb your appetite after a workout so you are less likely to order your favourite Dubai pizza for dinner!

TIP #3: Make time to review your progress.

Set a timer on your phone to give yourself 5 minutes, once a week, to review the choices you have made. This short practice can help you evaluate how to move forward. If you had trouble achieving your goals that week, scale back to an even smaller target and start from there. Once your small steps feel become regular habits, scale up to a bigger goal!

We hope you find these tips helpful!

Starting a workout routine can feel like a challenge. With so many options available, it seems crucial to research possibilities before investing time and money on your health. To help ease your mind before beginning your fitness journey with us, we have compiled these five frequently asked questions about starting workout routine at DEFINE body & mind:

Is it ok to take DEFINE classes as a beginner?

Our classes are open to all levels. If you are new to exercise, be sure to give your instructor a heads-up, and she will make sure to help you navigate your class with confidence.

How often should I workout?

As a beginner, aim to move your body 2-4 days each week. DEFINE classes are low impact, making them safe to attend multiple times a week. If you begin with two sessions, aim to increase to three by the 3rd week of training and four by the 4th. After eight weeks of training, your workouts should feel like a natural part of your weekly routine.

Do I need to include mind and yoga if weight loss is my goal?

A crucial part of a successful weight loss journey is consistency in training. DEFINE yoga and mind will help you develop balance in your body. The balance will prevent injuries and keep you healthy enough to attend all of your scheduled sessions. We strongly recommend incorporating 1 DEFINE yoga or mind class for every 2 DEFINE body or rev classes.

Should I workout when I am sore?

Because of the low impact nature of our classes, it is safe to attend class with soreness present. If the soreness is intense, consider taking one day off before returning to training. Try to train once every two days to help your muscles adjust to a more active lifestyle.

How long before I start to see changes in my body?

Rev (indoor cycling) and body (barre) are perfect to help you see changes in your body. If you are incorporating a combination of these classes at least four times a week, you will feel the changes after eight sessions. You will see them soon after! In a few weeks time, with guidance from the DEFINE team, you should be achieving visible results.

Looking for more specific answers? E-mail your questions to dubai@definebody.com or stop by DEFINE and meet with one of our experienced instructors to learn more about starting a workout routine.

Looking for a way to feel more balanced and calm? Cultivating a rolling and stretching practice can help you gain flexibility, encourage proper muscle function, and melt away stress. This short routine combines yoga postures, stretching, and ball-rolling to have you feeling relaxed in under 10 minutes!

yoga

BALASANA “CHILDS POSE”
Begin with this restorative yoga posture to calm your mind. Allow gentle inhales and exhales. Let go of your worries and stress. Feel your spine elongate, hips open, and unwanted tension melt away. Breathe here for 60 seconds.

yogaCHEST STRETCH AND SHOULDER RELEASE
Tight chest and shoulder muscles can be a side effect of stress. Long hours spent at a desk can cause your shoulders to round forward creating shorter, tighter muscles in your chest. If you maintain poor posture, eventually you may experience neck, shoulder, and upper back pain. Place your DEFINE ball under the head of your shoulder to help release tension and give your chest a nice stretch. Allow 30-60 seconds on each shoulder to alleviate tightness.

yogaGLUTE RELEASE
Your glutes are comprised of 3 muscles, each with a different action, but all working to steady your hips and thighs. If you experience tightness in one or all of these muscles, you may feel pain in your low back or hips. Use your DEFINE mind ball to roll your glute in a clockwise and counterclockwise circle. If you find a particularly tender spot, you can pause with pressure on the area and breathe. You should feel your muscles release a bit more with every exhale. Try 30 seconds of rolling and 30 seconds of pressure on each glute.

yogaHAMSTRING STRETCH
Movements such as walking, running, and sitting for long periods of time all contribute to tightness in your hamstrings. Sitting, in particular, keeps the muscles in a tightened state. Along with your glutes, tight hamstrings can contribute to lower back pain. Breathe into this stretch to avoid excess tension. Allow your neck to release tension and your head to hang heavy. Ease into this stretch for 30-60 seconds.

yogaSUPTA MATSYENDRASANA “SUPINE SPINAL TWIST”
Twisting your core massages, stretches, and tones your internal organs, which improves your digestion. Allow both of your shoulders to relax on your mat. Close your eyes and relax your facial muscles. Breathe deeply into your belly. Make sure to twist to both sides. Spend anywhere from 30-60 seconds on each side.

If you have 60 more seconds to give at the end of this sequence, return to child’s pose and notice any shift in your energy, mood, and muscles. It takes time to form a new habit, so commit to at least 20 days to begin building your routine!

Looking for a longer stretch sequence? Join our mind classes. We use the DEFINE ball and aerial hammocks to create lasting space and length in your body leading to a better-balanced feeling in day-to-day life.

DEFINE body & mind‘s mission is to educate people on how to become their absolute best through fitness classes that inspire results! In addition to the strength and balance you build through our classes, you also find length in your muscles to consistently achieve your best workout. Length means reach, distance, purpose, extending boundaries, flexibility, reaching for an unlimited experience!  For this stretch series, you will need to use your DEFINE strap.

Follow these five stretches to guide you toward release:

stretchingexercise

Hamstring stretch: Walking, running, and sitting for long periods of time, can create tightness in your hamstrings. The tension of your hamstrings has a direct effect on your lower back. The tighter the hamstrings are, the greater the chance for tension and tightness in the low back. Stretching your hamstrings can provide relief for lower back pain.

Outer thigh/ glutes stretch: Our DEFINE body class aims to strengthen your thighs and glutes, but maintaining functional flexibility is important for injury prevention. Stretching and allowing recovery of your outer thighs and glutes will prepare these muscles to stabilize your hips during your next class.

Inner Thigh Stretch: Your inner thigh has attachment points at your hip and around your knee. Pain in either of these places can be a sign that your inner thigh muscles are tight. If you notice knee sensitivity during class, try taking a few minutes to stretch before and after your session to provide relief.

Heart opening/ Chest and shoulder stretch: By stretching your chest and breathing deeply, you can unlock more capacity for breath. This is important because, in order to achieve your best workout and train at a more intense level, you must be able to utilize efficient breathing. Incorporate this stretch daily if you spend a long time driving, sitting at a desk, or hunched over your phone.

Side-body stretch: Taking a side bend can help relieve stiffness in your spine. This stretch is another opportunity to create more lung capacity. When performing this move, take deep intentional breaths into the place along your ribs where you feel the stretch. Make sure to get both sides!

Each stretch should be held for at least 30 seconds before releasing the tension. Remember to stretch in a range of motion that is comfortable for you. Instead of forcing a stretch, think breath and soften into a stretch.

To learn more about achieving your best workout through stretch, release, and deep relaxation,

attend a DEFINE mind class.

Creating a lifestyle transformation is a big accomplishment! Faye is nearing her 100th class at DEFINE and is feeling stronger than she has in a long time!

Here is her story:

“I am 42.  A few months ago I felt like I was carrying a lot of weight and wasn’t moving easily. Everything physical was hard work. I thought, ok, I’ve got to do something. I would walk by DEFINE and I had a friend who took classes there, but I kept putting off taking my first class (she put it off for six months!) I felt myself getting less healthy and less healthy but I didn’t want to come with my friend because I felt like I wasn’t fit enough and I was embarrassed by that.

I now find working out with a friend actually makes we work harder but back then I wanted to get the first few classes under my belt without anyone seeing me. The great thing is that when I came, my first DEFINE body class was with Lianna. She was just so friendly I didn’t feel like I needed a friend with me. She told me to take my time, not to rush the moves. It wasn’t intimidating.

I used the DEFINE app to book ahead. That helped me commit to classes. The first two weeks, I made sure I kept coming back and didn’t take too much time off between classes. I met other people who had similar goals to me. I remember in one of my first classes, someone gave me advice on how to work on my spin form and they encouraged me to have fun which made the whole thing less intimidating.  I began to see my friends improving and that really kept me going.”

What is the biggest change you felt after the first two weeks?

“Now I am a bit addicted. I didn’t expect to feel so good after the first two weeks. My insides felt cleaner as if I sweated out loads of toxins. I also was eating better because I knew I needed energy for class. You can’t do these types of classes and eat crap. I ate less processed food and noticed what food made me feel better for class.

I see now how you can have balance (Faye still enjoys wine and cheese nights!) I know in the days leading up to a night out I will take more DEFINE rev to burn more calories. I may go have dinner and not drinks or vice versa. I thought my friends may mind, but they really don’t! Your internal struggles are tough in Dubai. Only you can say yes or no to the temptations. The most difficult part is not letting one temptation turn into a series of temptations. Like brunch turning into an afternoon at Mcgettigans followed by a day in bed, hungover.

Booking classes and having a good intention for the next day has helped me to not over do it the day before. You don’t need a duvet day every week, but it’s Dubai you still need to go out!.”

What advice do you have for others wanting to begin make a health and wellness transformation?

“Stop thinking about it, just do it! I really wish now I had started all those months ago when I was just thinking about it. Break your goals into small bits and say, ok I am just going to try 2 or 3 weeks and if I don’t like it what have I lost?… nothing! Get started now.”
